CHAPTER 6
Tears formed in Ellieâs eyes as she chewed her lower lip, willing them to recede.
Doris patted her hand. âAw, Doll, donât fret. Iâm certain Alice will find a way to help. Sheâs wonderful with science things like this.â
Ellie sniffled and nodded, offering her a weak smile. âRight. Iâm just tired. And panicking.â
âTell her about us. I bet youâll go right home if you do that,â Kitty said, rubbing against Ellieâs legs.
âAw, look, Kitty knows youâre upset and is trying to comfort you. Kitty, youâre so kind.â
âI am not. I want her to do something for us.â The cat shook her paw as she glared at Doris.
Ellie reached down and stroked her head.
Mopsie approached and gave her fingers a lick. âIâm being kind.â
Doris cocked her head as she studied the animals with Ellie. âYou know, sometimes I think animals know what weâre saying and can understand when we need a little extra love.â
âNowâs the perfect time to tell her about us,â Kitty encouraged.
Ellie bit her lower lip and flicked her gaze at Doris as she took a bite of her sandwich. Maybe the cat had a point. Maybe it would work. Sheâd inexplicably traveled back in time. In the realm of all things possible, maybe telling Doris her dog and cat could speak would correct the universe.
Ellie licked her lower lips before she plowed into the conversation. âYou know, Doris, I think youâre onto something there.â
âHow so?â
âWell, what ifâ¦the animals could understand us and answer. But not all of us could hear them?â
Doris chewed a bite of her food as she considered it. âIâm not sure I understand. Are you saying Iâve got talking pets?â
Ellie smiled and flicked up her eyebrows. âMaybe.â
Doris set her sandwich down on her plate and eyed the two animals across the room. âKitty, can you speak?â
âOf course I can. Iâve been talking to you for five years.â
Doris tilted her head, shifting her gaze to the dog. âAnd what about you Mopsie?â
âSure,â the dog said, leaping to her feet and wagging her tail.
Doris smiled at them both. âWouldnât it be a more interesting world if they could?â
âButâ¦â Ellie began before sucking in a breath. âYou bet it would.â
âWhat a fun idea. Maybe Iâll mention it to Alice. Iâd wager sheâd have a ball testing it out and seeing if we can communicate with them.â
Ellie plastered a smile onto her face before she returned to her meal.
âDumb Doras,â Kitty grumbled before she stalked from the room.
They polished off their sandwiches and called it a night. Ellie shuffled past her room with a forlorn glance before continuing to the one she was currently staying in.
She climbed into bed and tugged up the covers as she prepared for a sleepless night. She squeezed her eyes closed, trying to stop herself from crying when a creak made her pop them open again.
Her heart thudded, and she scanned the room. The door stood open, though sheâd closed it when she came in. How had itâ
A black shadow leapt in the air, landing at her feet.
