CHAPTER 6

Tears formed in Ellie’s eyes as she chewed her lower lip, willing them to recede.

Doris patted her hand. “Aw, Doll, don’t fret. I’m certain Alice will find a way to help. She’s wonderful with science things like this.”

Ellie sniffled and nodded, offering her a weak smile. “Right. I’m just tired. And panicking.”

“Tell her about us. I bet you’ll go right home if you do that,” Kitty said, rubbing against Ellie’s legs.

“Aw, look, Kitty knows you’re upset and is trying to comfort you. Kitty, you’re so kind.”

“I am not. I want her to do something for us.” The cat shook her paw as she glared at Doris.

Ellie reached down and stroked her head.

Mopsie approached and gave her fingers a lick. “I’m being kind.”

Doris cocked her head as she studied the animals with Ellie. “You know, sometimes I think animals know what we’re saying and can understand when we need a little extra love.”

“Now’s the perfect time to tell her about us,” Kitty encouraged.

Ellie bit her lower lip and flicked her gaze at Doris as she took a bite of her sandwich. Maybe the cat had a point. Maybe it would work. She’d inexplicably traveled back in time. In the realm of all things possible, maybe telling Doris her dog and cat could speak would correct the universe.

Ellie licked her lower lips before she plowed into the conversation. “You know, Doris, I think you’re onto something there.”

“How so?”

“Well, what if…the animals could understand us and answer. But not all of us could hear them?”

Doris chewed a bite of her food as she considered it. “I’m not sure I understand. Are you saying I’ve got talking pets?”

Ellie smiled and flicked up her eyebrows. “Maybe.”

Doris set her sandwich down on her plate and eyed the two animals across the room. “Kitty, can you speak?”

“Of course I can. I’ve been talking to you for five years.”

Doris tilted her head, shifting her gaze to the dog. “And what about you Mopsie?”

“Sure,” the dog said, leaping to her feet and wagging her tail.

Doris smiled at them both. “Wouldn’t it be a more interesting world if they could?”

“But…” Ellie began before sucking in a breath. “You bet it would.”

“What a fun idea. Maybe I’ll mention it to Alice. I’d wager she’d have a ball testing it out and seeing if we can communicate with them.”

Ellie plastered a smile onto her face before she returned to her meal.

“Dumb Doras,” Kitty grumbled before she stalked from the room.

They polished off their sandwiches and called it a night. Ellie shuffled past her room with a forlorn glance before continuing to the one she was currently staying in.

She climbed into bed and tugged up the covers as she prepared for a sleepless night. She squeezed her eyes closed, trying to stop herself from crying when a creak made her pop them open again.

Her heart thudded, and she scanned the room. The door stood open, though she’d closed it when she came in. How had it–

A black shadow leapt in the air, landing at her feet.
